Sexual exploitation of students

Yesterday, the police arrested another official of Islamia University Bahawalpur on the charge of buying or selling drugs and Sexual exploitation of students.

This arrest comes a day after the arrest of Syed Ijaz Hussain Shah, the chief security officer of the university. The police recovered ice, sex pills and objectionable videos of students and staff from the said official’s possession.

On the other hand, a special police report claims that a group of teachers in the university is involved in selling drugs and sexually exploiting female students and teachers.

The City Circle Police detained the transport in-charge of Islamia University Bahawalpur and allegedly recovered 8 grams of crystal meth from his possession. According to an FIR, the police registered a case under Section 9 (2) 1 of the Anti-Narcotics Act, 1997 and started investigation.

On June 28, Baghdad-Jadeed Police arrested the treasurer of Islamia University Bahawalpur, who allegedly recovered crystal meth and sex-inducing pills, and registered a case against him.

Later, 2 days ago on July 21, the police arrested the chief security officer of Islamia University Bahawalpur and allegedly recovered from his possession drugs and sexually provocative pills, as well as several objectionable videos from 2 mobile phones.

The security chief of the university was detained and several aphrodisiac pills and drugs were recovered from his possession along with sexually explicit material from his phone.

Sexual exploitation of students

In a special report, the police claimed that the two officials arrested on drug charges were also involved in blackmailing and sexually abusing students and teachers in the university.

The report claimed that the treasurer admitted that he along with a group of other teachers used to buy and distribute drugs among students and organize dance/promiscuous parties.

The police revealed that a gang of university teachers used to exploit/blackmail girls and trap them using drugs (ice, alcohol and hashish) with the help of the security in-charge of the university.

The police stopped the security chief at an overpass at Baghdad Al-Jadeed Mor and recovered 10 grams of ice and 5 sex-inducing pills from his pocket and registered a case under Section 9 (2) 1 of the Narcotics Control Act, 1997.

The Dawn newspaper report said that the accused revealed that some teachers were involved in buying, selling and using these drugs with him and that he used to organize lewd parties inside and outside the campus with students and female staff of the university.

After checking the mobile phone of the accused, the investigation team also traced some students involved in drug supply and purchase.

Investigations revealed that 11 students admitted to the university had criminal records and were involved in drug dealing.

The investigative report also includes screenshots of messages sent to mobile phones for buying and selling drugs Sexual exploitation of students and objectionable images of women.

The police action is an attempt to defame the university

In response to the police action against the university authorities, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Athar Mehboob wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar.

The said letter requested the IG to form a high-level inquiry team to investigate the arrests.

The letter said that Islamia University Bahawalpur is following a ‘zero tolerance policy’ against the use of prohibited drugs and Sexual exploitation of students harassment, adding that the cases against university officials are ‘bogus’.

In another letter to the IG, the legal adviser of Islamia University Bahawalpur requested the IG to reconstitute the investigation team, saying that in both the FIRs registered at Baghdad Al-Jadeed Police Station Bahawalpur, there was an individual witness, the said official was allegedly involved in drug cases and is on judicial remand.

He also requested the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court to order a judicial inquiry as this action is being taken against the university.

Formation of investigation committee

Meanwhile, South Punjab’s Higher Education Department (HED) secretary has constituted a committee to investigate the case registered against the Chief Security Officer for carrying/using prohibited material and objectionable material being recovered from his mobile phone.

The committee is chaired by Director of Public Instruction (Colleges), South Punjab, Dr. Farid Sharif, other members of the committee include Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad, Director of the Institute of Physics, Prof. Dr. Saeed Buzdar, and Additional Registrar, Bilal Arshad, among others.

The Committee was directed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and examine all relevant evidence (including any available digital or physical evidence, testimonies and other relevant information).

Apart from this, University Vice Chancellor Athar Mehboob also formed 2 inquiry committees to investigate the cases registered against the treasurer and chief security officers of the university.
