In the heart of Peshawar, a city known for its resilience, a tragic blast claimed the life of Mufti Munir Shakir (MMS)—a man whose journey was as controversial as it was courageous. Born in 1969 in District Karak, MMS rose to prominence as a religious scholar, a fiery orator, and the founder of the armed group Lashkar-e-Islam. His life was a tapestry of bold decisions, ideological shifts, and an unyielding commitment to his beliefs, making him a figure both revered and reviled.
From Humble Beginnings to a Polarizing Figure
Mufti Munir Shakir’s early years were rooted in the teachings of the Deobandi sub-sect Panjpiri. He gained recognition through his association with the organization “Asha’at-e-Tauheed,” where he actively participated in debates and wrote extensively on topics like monotheism, spiritual guardianship, and the rejection of hadith. However, his journey took a dramatic turn when he severed ties with the organization and embraced the “Ahl-e-Quran” movement, advocating that the Quran alone was the true source of Islamic teachings.
Founder of Lashkar-e-Islam
In 2004, MMS founded Lashkar-e-Islam in Bara, Khyber, a move that would define his legacy. Through an FM radio station, he propagated his ideas, which soon led to a bitter rivalry with Afghan religious leader Pir Saifur Rahman. The conflict escalated into armed clashes, culminating in a major confrontation in 2006. A tribal jirga eventually intervened, expelling Pir Saifur Rahman and paving the way for Mangal Bagh to take over Lashkar-e-Islam, which was later banned in 2008.
A Bold and Unapologetic Voice
MMS was no stranger to controversy. His bold and often aggressive rhetoric earned him a massive following, but it also made him a target. In 2007, he was allegedly detained at Karachi Airport and remained missing for two years. Despite the challenges, he continued to speak his mind, using social media platforms like Facebook to share his provocative views, which garnered both admiration and criticism.
A Shift in Ideology
In his later years, MMS underwent a significant ideological transformation. He became an outspoken critic of state oppression, the persecution of Pashtuns, and the war on terror. His participation in the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) and his fearless speeches, particularly at the Pashtun Jirga on October 11, 2024, showcased his unwavering commitment to justice and equality.
A Tragic End
On March 15, 2025, Mufti Munir Shakir’s life was cut short in a bomb blast outside his madrassa in Shagi Qila Tauheedabad, Peshawar, during Asr prayers. His death marked the end of a tumultuous yet impactful journey. He left behind a legacy of courage, resilience, and an unyielding pursuit of truth.
Remembering MMS
Mufti Munir Shakir’s life was a testament to the power of conviction. Whether one agreed with his views or not, there was no denying his influence and the mark he left on Pakistan’s religious and political landscape. His story serves as a reminder that even the most controversial figures can inspire change and challenge the status quo.
As we reflect on his life, one thing is clear: Mufti Munir Shakir was a man who lived by his principles, unafraid to stand alone in the face of adversity. His legacy will continue to spark debates, inspire movements, and remind us of the complexities of faith, identity, and resistance.
