Justice Musarrat Hilali became the second woman judge in the Supreme Court after taking oath.

 

During a ceremony held at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandyal administered the oath to Justice Musarrat Hilali, who was earlier serving as the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court.

Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, senior judges and lawyers also participated in the swearing-in ceremony.

The total approved number of judges of the Supreme Court is 17, after the promotion of Justice Musrat Hilali, the number of serving judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 16.

It should be noted that on July 5, the President of the State approved the appointment of Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Justice Musarrat Hilali to the Supreme Court.

In the notification issued by the Federal Ministry of Law and Justice, it was stated that the President of the State has approved the appointment of Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Justice Musrat Hilali to the Supreme Court by using the powers granted under clause one of Article 177 of the Constitution of Pakistan. .

In January last year, Justice Ayesha Malik was sworn in as the first woman judge of the Supreme Court in Pakistan, which politicians and human rights activists have termed as a historic moment.

It may be recalled that on June 14, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) recommended the appointment of Justice Musarrat Hilali, the second woman judge in the history of the Supreme Court, which was also recommended by the Parliamentary Committee.

In the judicial commission meeting presided over by Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial, senior judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Ejaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, in addition to Federal Minister for Law Nazir Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Awan, Justice (retd) Sarmad Usman Jalali and Pakistan Bar Council Akhtar Hussain attended.

During the meeting, the Judicial Commission agreed on the name of Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Justice Musrat Hilali and recommended her appointment as a Supreme Court judge.

Justice Musarrat Hilali’s professional journey

It should be noted that last month the President Dr. Arif Alvi approved the appointment of Justice Musarrat Hilali, who was acting as the Acting Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court under Article 175 A (13) of the Constitution. was given

On April 1, Justice Musarrat Hilali was sworn in as the Acting Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court, after which she became the first woman in the history of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In 1988, he obtained the license of the High Court and in 2006, the license of the Supreme Court.

In 2013, she was appointed as Additional Judge of Peshawar High Court and became a permanent judge in 2014.

Justice Musarat Hilali was actively involved in the 2007 lawyers’ movement and participated in protests alongside male lawyers.

Apart from this, she also has the honor of holding the positions of Peshawar High Court Bar Vice President, Secretary, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s first female Additional Advocate General, and the first Provincial Ombudsman.

Born on August 8, 1961 in Peshawar, Justice Musarrat Hilali started practicing law in 1983 after receiving her law degree from Khyber Law College.
